Michel Foucault once remarked, “A whole history remains to be written of spaces – which would at the same time be the history of powers – from the great strategies of geopolitics to the little tactics of the habitat.”  Cityscapes have always enchanted storytellers, artists, and filmmakers due to their complexity and layers of meaning. Portraying urban landscapes goes beyond capturing physical structures; it involves conveying the atmosphere, culture, and essence of a city. The setting of a story plays a crucial role, providing context and depth to the narrative. The backdrop of a story is essential for its success, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between cinema and the city. Cities are more than just buildings. Films capture not only how cities look but also the dreams and hopes of their inhabitants. When you watch a movie, you see the city through the filmmaker's eyes, experiencing its famous landmarks, bustling streets, and quiet neighborhoods—all of which contribute to the city's character. Among filmmakers, Basu Chatterji stands out for his masterful portrayal of Mumbai. While many films have depicted Mumbai's diverse socio-economic spectrum, Chatterji uniquely captured the joys and struggles of the middle class. His depiction of Bombay (now Mumbai) was characterized by simplicity and authenticity, presenting an urban landscape where dreams and reality coexisted. This heritage walk will transport you to the era of timeless classics like "Rajnigandha," "Chhoti Si Baat," and "Baton Baton Mein." Chatterji portrayed the city as a canvas for human emotions and relationships, emphasizing the importance of personal connections amidst urban chaos. Join us on this walk as we explore Basu Da's films, pass through some of his iconic locations where memorable scenes were shot, and discuss the unique setting of Mumbai. We'll delve into the music, the history of architecture in the Fort area, and celebrate a Bombay that lives on in the memories of Mumbaikars. Together, we'll explore the charm of Bombay through films, music, architecture, and countless stories. This walk is not just about Basu Chatterji but about the dreams and stories of many. It is a blend of history, cinema, and heritage. The walk starts at Pizza By the Bay and concludes at the famous Kala Ghoda and Jehangir Art Gallery. Come, rediscover Basu Da's Bombay with us—a journey through the heart of a city that continues to inspire and captivate.
